NOW PODCASTING The Boy Fortune Hunters in Alaska By Floyd Akers (L. Frank Baum)

L. Frank Baum, writing as Floyd Akers, published The Boy Fortune Hunters in Alaska in 1906. Apparently Baum wrote them under the pen name (F. Akers= "Fakers", ugh!) because the work was so different from his fantasy books at the time-- his publisher thought they might be easier to sell with a different name on them. The story concerns Sam Steele, the son of a sea captain; his father is reported killed in a shipwreck, and Sam is quickly cheated of his inheritance. Now an orphan, he meets his maternal uncle, Naboth Perkins, another sea captain and ship-owner; together the two set sail in the Pacific trade. The story is the precursor to all the boy adventurer series that would follow later in the 20th Century-- from the Hardy Boy to Tom Swift to Rick Brant!!
